Early History of the Rus: The Early Eastern Slavs to the fall of the Kievan State

A lecture following the appearance and establishment of the Rüs people, until the fall of the Kievan State and Mongol Invasion in early 13th century. Points of interest include: the indigenous Eastern Slav tribes of modern day Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus; the establishment of the Rurik Dynasty and the problems with the term ‘Rüs’; the establishment of the Kievan State and the Christianization of the Rüs; the Golden Age of Kiev; the Decline of the Kievan State and the Mongol Invasion.

Early Rus Clothing I: The Basics

The first hour examines the overall look of pre-Mongol Invasion Rüs clothing, roughly the mid 9th century to early 13th century. Influences, fabrics, cuts, shoes and the general profile and layers will be covered. A broad look will also be taken at embellishments such as trims, jewelry, headdresses, and caste differences.

Early Rus Clothing II: The Embellishments

The second hour examines the details of the embellishments of pre-Mongol Invasion Rüs clothing, roughly the mid 9th century to early 13th century. A closer look will be taken at the trims, jewelry, headdresses, and expand upon the various garment cuts presented in Part 1. The various regional, cultural, and caste influences and their effect on Rüs clothing will also be covered.

The Guedra: A North African Ritualistic Trance Dance

Achieving a different state of consciousness is important in many religions, and trance dancing is one way to achieve it. The guedra is a trance dance performed by the Tuareg. The ritual can include drummers, chanters and the dancer. While only women perform the dance, men can participate as drummers and/or chanters. We will walk through the different portions of the ritual while explaining the process. Observers who do not feel comfortable participating are also welcome.

Pattern darning is an embroidery technique in which running stitches are worked in patterns to create a geometric design. It was used to decorate garments and household items during the Mamluk period and is a fast, easy, and beautiful technique for SCA use. The class will include a brief overview of pattern darning but will be mostly hands on. Kits with linen ground and silk thread will be available for a small fee, or bring your own materials (even weave ground fabric, thread, needle).

For example, coins of Novgorod had the likeness of St. Peter but used Thor’s Hammer in place of “T,” or molds that have a cross on one end and the hammer on the other.
